Chapter Twenty-two

Pirelli sat at his desk in his office going over paperwork for two new properties he was in the process of acquiring, one in the Irishtown neighborhood in Cleveland, and one in Lexington, Kentucky. The Lexington property was a horse farm that would cost Pirelli more than half the assets he had squirreled away since beginning his conquest of Cleveland’s criminal empire. But if everything went as planned for the place, it would bring him millions in return.

Doris entered the room with an armful of paperwork, some of it in manila folders, some of it loose. Pirelli took one look at the woman and slouched down in his chair. The last thing he needed now was more paperwork.

“Don’t look so glum, Mr. Pirelli,” Doris said. “This isn’t anything that needs signing. I’ve found something and I wanted to show you before I left for the day.”

“What is it?” Pirelli asked.

“The walls in this place aren’t thin, but they don’t need to be for me to hear you and your business partners hooting and hollering about this Belmont fellow. I figure if I’m ever to get any peace and quiet in this office again, I’d need to help in your search.”

Pirelli simply looked at the woman, amazed by her gall. Doris began spreading the paperwork out in front of Pirelli.

“I’ve been down at the public records office so often in the last month, they’ve given me free reign of the place,” Doris said. “I was able to look through deeds for properties you weren’t interested in purchasing without anyone questioning it.”

Pirelli leaned forward and looked at the paperwork, his interest piqued.

Doris tapped a stack of papers. “I’m sure you’re aware of this property, the Belmont home in Irishtown, and I assume these people are smart enough not to return there right away if your men are searching for them.”

Pirelli nodded. “I’ve got eyes on the place just in case.”

“Yes, well, that’s only prudent. When you first started these acquisitions I had created a list of properties O’Bannon owned in and around Cleveland. You remember? We went over them together. At the time you were only interested in the properties within Cleveland’s city limits. But he owned more than that.”

Doris tapped another stack of paperwork. “Mentor-on-the-Lake. O’Bannon owned a few properties out there.” She flipped through the papers in the stack, then pulled out a deed. “This one was in O’Bannon’s name ten years ago, then it was switched to another owner, not as a sale, but as a gifted property. Look at the name of the new owner.”

“Holy shit,” Pirelli said. “Boden Belmont…”

“Yes, Mr. Pirelli, though I really don’t see the need for that sort of language.”

Pirelli leaned back in his chair and began smoothing his mustache with his fingers. “Mentor-on-the-Lake. We followed the big bastard for over a year leading up to the war. The wife too. I don’t recall anyone reporting either of them going up there.”

“Yes, I considered that as well. I started going through more public records and made a few calls.
